After the death of the Mongol Great Khan Qubilay in 693 H/1294 CE, the Ilkhans’ links with the Great Khans loosened, and after Ghazan Mahmud converted to Sunni Islam in 694/1295 they became virtually non-existent. Ghazan Mahmud led a campaign to overthrow his cousin Baydu who had never accepted Islam. He reached the gates of Tabriz on the very day on which Baydu was executed and, as soon as he succeeded to the throne, he ordered that all churches, synagogues and Buddhist temples were to be destroyed throughout his domains. He reformed the administration, agriculture and trade, and his wazir Rashid al-din reformed the Ilkhan monetary system, beginning in 696 H. This coin was probably a treasury issue, because it was too large and valuable to be used for daily purchases. But its wide flan gave the die-sinker an opportunity to display his virtuosity by inscribing the legends in Kufic and Naskhi Arabic and Uyghur.
